While Amber Cove might have the vibe of a private cruise line island, it’s actually not. And that means unlike some private islands where drink packages and wi-fi service bought on the ship also extend to the port, it’s not the case here. Instead, if you want to drink then you’ll have to pay bar prices. And wi-fi service is available in the port area for $8 per day.

Damajagua tours offer activities like hiking, rafting, in-cave and natural pool swimming. If so, you’ll want to be sure to bring a beach towel from the ship. All cruise ships offer towels to passengers (typically there is a station by the pool). There are no towels available in the port, so if you forget yours, then you’ll have to air-dry. The facility, a joint project between Carnival Corporation and the Rannik family of Grupo B&R, is expected to host more than 250,000 cruise passengers in its first year of operation. The cost of renting a cabana ranges from $520 for a poolside cabana to $2,000 for the Grand Cabana.
Visit La Playa de Maimon

The Amber Cove Cruise Center: activities, services, and amenities
The walk to La Playita de Maimon is about 20 minutes from Amber Cove. It is the small beach located to the left of the cruise ship terminal. You will need to leave the port area to reach the beach as there is no direct access to the beach from Amber Cove. La Playita de Maimon is a small, secluded beach and perfect if you are looking for a quiet, serene beach experience. There are stores and restaurants near the beach where you can grab a bite to eat. A long pier leads from the cruise ship to the huge shopping area with cobblestone plazas.
Organized excursions and Tours
Amber Cove has warm and swim-worthy sea temperatures all year round, but particularly in August. Click here to check the local weather in Puerto Plata and Amber Cove. The project is designed to re-establish the Dominican Republic’s North Coast as a popular cruise destination. The last cruise ship to call at Puerto Plata was nearly 30 years ago. This 5-hour tour includes transport aboard an air-conditioned bus with a local guide who will introduce you to the history and highlights of Puerto Plata.
Luckily, many of Carnival’s port city experiences include adventures for your taste buds. Enjoy an authentic lunch at Coconut Cove, or give back to the community before enjoying a meal at a traditional restaurant. Of course, you won’t be the only living thing on Amber Cove.

The entrance can be a little hidden, but it’s along the back of the port area and up a hill. You’ll be able to see the slides from the pool — just head over to figure out where to go. There is a 230 pound weight limit, and you must be at least 4 feet tall to ride. There are bar stations around the pool, as well as the large Coco Cana (a restaurant by the pool with a swim-up bar) serving libations.
With a few exceptions, the cruise port in Amber Cove is mainly visited by ships belonging to Carnival Corporation like Carnival Cruises, Princess, Holland America, Costa, P&O or Cunard. However, other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, NCL, Regent or MSC also call at Amber Cove. A transportation hub allowing visitors easy access by land and sea to the surrounding destinations and attractions will be included, as well.
The poolside cabana is situated in the heart of the action at Amber Cove. Whether you want to relax in the large pool or be close to the Coco Caña Pool Bar, these cabanas are perfect for those wanting some privacy, rather than sitting on a lounge chair. During construction, some Norwegian ships did dock at Carnival's pier; however, if you have an upcoming sailing onboard NCL, you'll dock at Taino, rather than Amber Cove.
If you’re going to stay in port, then by far the big attraction is the pool area. It’s broken into different areas that are connected with bridges so even though it can be busy, it can still make the spots seem more private. The main portion of the pool near the swim-up bar gets pretty lively.
As for the layout of the port area itself, it’s fairly easy to navigate. First, your ship will dock at the pier, and then it’s a short walk to Amber Cove. Once through, straight ahead will be the meeting points for booked shore excursions. To the left are a number of restaurants, shops, and the way to exit the port and grab a taxi. To the right is the “Aqua Zone” that’s complete with a huge pool, waterslide, cabanas, and much more (more on this below). If you're staying put, rent one of the private villas that are perched out on the water, built into the hillside or alongside the pool.
If you want to get out on the water, then there are plenty of rentals to choose from. Cruisers visiting Amber Cove have the option of renting kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and more. The fees are a bit steep — starting around $35 per hour — but some of those can be split by multiple people such as the pedal boats that carry four. No matter what’s on your shopping list, there will be a store in Amber Cove that sells it. The shopping area takes up one entire side of the port, giving you plenty of options to choose.
For the ultimate adventure, check out this shore excursion with horseback riding, zip lining and a mega-truck tour all in one.
