Dr. Straus is a primary care pediatrician and the founding director of the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program . Begun in 2004, MCPAP was the first statewide program designed to address the shortage of child psychiatrists. Dr. Straus was responsible for the expansion of MCPAP to include MCPAP for Moms to address perinatal depression, mental illness, and substance use. MCPAP is the model for the implementation of access programs in 38 other states and for the federal legislation in the 21st Century Cures Act which led to the 21 state pediatric HRSA grants and 7 state maternal HRSA grants.
